The funny thing about nostalgia is that you can’t really know for certain what you’ll be nostalgic for when you live long enough to look back at your life. You might think it would be the defining moments or the big choices you made, but so often it’s the nothing days and the people you didn’t get a chance to know that reverberate the longest.
Eephus takes place over the day before an old baseball field gets paved over where a local game between rec leagues plays out over the course of a day. The players are not good, the point of the game unclear, and the future of their friendships/relationships/tolerance of each other seems dire without the game as an excuse, but for one day, for these men, there’s baseball. For fans of the gentle melancholy of Kelly Reichardt and understated comedy along the likes of Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, Eephus might be your new favorite movie.
