The vitals:

7:30 ~ Vulcan Gas Company: A Cultural Utility
One of the untold origin stories of the “Live Music Capital of the World”, the Vulcan Gas Company opened its doors on October 27, 1967 in Austin, Texas. While the West Coast was just coming down from the “Summer of Love”, a group of surprisingly resourceful counterculture members gathered around the University of Texas organized this scene powered by bands such as the 13th Floor Elevators, Shiva’s Headband, Conqueroo and Johnny Winter and a strong local trade in psychedelics.
Through the three brief years of its existence, the Vulcan would feature legendary Texas acts such as Lightin’ Hopkins, Steve Miller Band, Mance Lipscomb, Bubble Puppy, the Vaughn brothers and Feddy King as well as draw national acts such as the Fugs, Canned Heat and the Velvet Underground.
This is the whole story of the club that would serve as the blueprint for later legendary venues such as Antone’s and the Armadillo World Headquarters told by the surviving founders and artists that made it happen.
