Doug Sahm was the greatest Texas musician you’ve never heard of, although you’ve most likely heard his music. A child prodigy, he sat on Hank Williams’ knee and mastered steel guitar and fiddle. He watched T-Bone Walker and Gatemouth Brown up close at a San Antonio nightclub near his home. As a teenager he had hit records on the radio, then achieved international fame leading the Sir Douglas Quintet, a band that dressed and sounded like part of the British Invasion.

Busted for cannabis possession, he fled to northern California for the Summer of Love in 1967, where the Quintet became a psychedelic fixture. Returning to Texas in 1972, he joined Willie Nelson in igniting Austin’s country, rock, and roots explosion, laying the foundation for what’s now called Americana. He topped charts in Scandinavia, won Junos in Canada, and formed the Grammy-winning Texas Tornados with Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez, and Augie Meyers. Above all, Sahm was an artist with so much music inside himself he had to play it all.

Sir Doug and the Genuine Texas Cosmic Groove, directed by Joe Nick Patoski and produced by Arts+Labor, tells this story with rare footage and unforgettable performances.
