Throughout the runtime of Noroi there is a persistent sense of wrongness, as if the supernatural force the characters are investigating is leaking out of the screen into the world around the viewer. Shiraishi uses the medium of found footage and the mockumentary style to build a compelling and unsettling mystery that rewards your attention with background scares and a whole lot of chilling implication when you and the characters realize the thread that’s being tugged on is much older and more sinister than what first impressions might have signalled. If your only experience with the genre is fare like Paranormal Activity, Noroi offers a whole new flavor of terror from an incredibly underrated director.
