Harris Dickinson delves into homelessness and drug use for his directorial debut — a choice both daring and timely. Homelessness is at an all-time-high, yet portrayals of life on the street in film remain woefully inadequate. Rather than offer the usual redemption story where suffering and poverty is overcome by good people who work hard, “Urchin” attempts to get much darker and more surreal — and perhaps in the end achieves something closer to reality. Critics are raving about Frank Dillane’s performance as protagonist, Mike, as well as Dickinson’s surrealist style. Though it may not upend our society’s attitudes about being unhoused and getting high, it promises to leave the viewer with a new perspective, the kind that only an intimate, beautiful and bizarre film can do.

Voices of Community Activists and Leaders-TX (VOCAL-TX) is a statewide grassroots membership organization that builds power among low-income people directly impacted by HIV/AIDS, the drug war, mass incarceration, and homelessness. We accomplish this through community organizing, leadership development, advocacy and direct action.
